Title Researched contextual analysis on social codes and expectations
This paper is a researched contextual analysis.
Choose a topic that emerges from the assigned readings in this reality unit. Choose
a topic that interests you, that you can relate to, and/or that you feel is particularly
relevant or current in our society. Begin with a list of possible topics and start
some basic Internet research to see if you want to develop the topic into a paper.
You can change your topic if you don’t like the direction it’s going.
I chose the topic on social codes and expectations.
Once you have settled on a topic, list the assigned readings from Unit 2 that seem
especially relevant to the topic. You will need to link your research to a minimum
of two of the assigned readings.
Assigned readings: Red fox fur coat by Gersao and The Disappearance of Elaine
Coleman by Millhauser
The textual analysis will be on one or two of the following: character, conflict,
setting. Review the notes on how to conduct a textual analysis of each of these
literary elements. Match up your topic with the literary element(s) that seem most
relevant. Four sources are required.
Start blending your research with your textual analysis. Which character traits are
common enough that you could supplement your textual analysis with research to
prove the existence of those traits in people? Which kinds of conflict in the texts
seem common enough that you could research causes and consequences of similar
conflicts in our society? Which details of setting seem researchable and relevant to
the text? Settle in on a topic, texts, literary elements, and points for research.
Write an outline that lists the points you want to make about character, conflict,
and/or setting. (Again: review the notes on how to analyze these elements of a text
because you’ll find various “points” that can be made.) Under each point you want
to make, list the specific relevant research topic(s). You do not need research to
support every point of textual analysis, but you do need to work the required four
sources into your paper.
