[SOLVED] The Disinformation Campaign
The Disinformation Campaign
Prompt: An essay in three sections
Analyze the many facets of the climate denial disinformation campaign as seen in the sources we’ve examined*:
/talking heads/Trump—review weeks seven and eight
Analyze the appeals of the talking points and their effectiveness, the emotional buttons pushed.
The Heritage Report Punch—week 9
Peeling the onion:
The arguments and why they’re chosen
The loaded language and how it appeals to—dog whistles—the “choir”
The shabby footnotes and how they “woozle” their way to looking legitimate
The Toxic Ten—week ten
How social media messaging snares people one headline “word biter” at a time—the dog whistles that play on distrust of climate change, that work in the echo chamber of right-wing social media
*Strategies often overlap between these categories: i.e. Luntz can be used in all three categories; the Heritage Foundation arguments find their way into Trump’s speech, and the Toxic Ten recycle many climate denial tricks. The goal is to represent each of these three disinformation platforms and develop the impact of their message on their audiences. Luntz and Trump are geared towards the general voting public, and their Heritage report is geared towards dyed-in-the-wool conservatives, while the Toxic Ten need special care as their arguments are more extreme and are stoking the fires of the more extreme elements of the far right, and because of that, bordering often on paranoia, a blight common to people with extreme POV on the left and the right.
