Your essay should include the following parts:
• Introduction (1 paragraph):
o Introduce the topic you will address in a manner that gets the reader interested in the topic.
o Contextualize: Items that are well-known need only brief descriptions. Items that are not so well-known require a more detailed summary.
o Be sure to include an explicitly stated thesis that maps out the specific stance you have taken and the main reasons behind your opinion. Use key words such as your chosen technology, obsolete or mainstream, and briefly identify your reasons in the thesis.
• Body (3-6 paragraphs):
o Utilize the body of the essay to take apart your argument. Identify the key reasons for your claimand provide sufficient evidence to support each reason.
o The evidence should be communicated with the tactics of persuasive writing in mind.
o Further, the ideas must be supported by evidence found in scholarly research (you must use 4+ sources from the campus library databases).
o Rely on quotes, paraphrases, and statistical information with the necessary citations included. There must be at least two quotes/paraphrases per body paragraph with the appropriate in-text citation.
o Finally, an evaluation of the objections or counter-arguments must also be included in the body of the essay. Be sure to fairly and respectfully address the opposing side, while offering evidence (quotes/paraphrases) from the research that shows how the opposition falls short in comparison to your argument.
• Conclusion (1 paragraph):
o Signal to the reader that you are through presenting new ideas by restating your thesis.
o Leave the reader thinking about your ideas by tying them to the bigger picture. In a persuasive essay, this often means providing the reader with a call to action.
• Works Cited Page (final page):
o The essay must include an accurate and informative list of the sources used in your essay, according to MLA format.
