You will also be answering questions relating to construction of interior elements.
OBJECTIVE:
To obtain a better understanding of and experience in the conceptual stage of the Design Process and to build on knowledge of construction pertinent to interior design.
PART A: COLOUR THEORY
1.1 Source 8 interior and exterior images (1 interior and 1
exterior for each scheme) which fit the following 4 colour
schemes:
• Harmonious/Analogous,
• Monochromatic
• Complementary / Contrasting
• Split Complementary.
1.2 Analyse their suitability in your space with reference to colour theory and colour psychology, and the mood or
atmosphere these colours and schemes portray.
1.3 Match each of the images to paint colours and provide physical paint swatch samples.
2. Explain the difference between Additive (CMYK) and Subtractive (RGB) colour.
3. What is the effect of natural and artificial light on colour within an interior space?
PART B: IDEATING
In your visual diary develop your conceptual ideas and include the following:
1. Using brainstorming, conceptual sketches and inspirational images to explore and experiment with your ideas.
2. Create a mind map to further extend your thoughts.
Consider functionality, ergonomics, aesthetics and sustainability.
3. Use 3 x bubble diagrams to explore zoning and space planning.
4. On sketch floor plans show furniture layouts, room functions and circulation paths to show your space planning.
5. Provide rendered 3D conceptual sketches showing ideas of how your proposed layouts will look (vignettes). Consider colour, texture, light and explore scale, volume and
proportion.
PART C: CONCEPT
Using the Concept Sketch pack (template supplied), prepare (2) unique concept designs which convey the overall feel and design intent of the proposed idea. These will be presented to your client.

Each concept must include:
• A creative Concept Name
• 150–word Design Statement
• Preliminary selection of Furniture, Accessories, Lighting (Furniture Presentation board)
• Preliminary Colour Palette & Materials and Finishes Samples (Finishes Presentation Board)
• 1x Sketch Concept Floor Plan including furniture layout (scale 1:100)
• 2x Sketch Elevations (scale 1:50)
• 1x Sketch Joinery piece (scale 1:10)
• Rendered 3D perspective sketches – 3 views of each concept, 6 in total (1x external facade, 2x interior spaces
for each).
*Note: Feedback on your 2 concepts will be provided by your lecturer after the submission of Task 2, and one (1) concept will be selected
for you to proceed with into Task 3, the Design Development stage.
Answer the questions at the end of the sketch pack.
PART D: CONSTRUCTION QUESTIONS
1. List all of the building classes under the Building Classification Codes (supply headings only).
2. Which are the two domestic building classes?
3. What is the classification of your building?
4. What are the Australian Standards, National Construction Code (NCC) and statutory planning regulations

• Masonry
• Steel
• Timber
• Weatherboard
8. What are the specific methods and sequences of construction for the interior elements involved in the
refurbishment of a wet area (laundry and ensuite)?
9. Research and list at least 10 materials, (hardware and fixtures) you could use in the construction and installation
of built-in cabinetry (in the ensuite)/
