Learning Activity 3: Ethical decision-making frameworks: Why do they matter?
This activity can be one of your three submissions in Assignment 1.
It is essential to understand what guides your thinking and how your thinking influences your actions in practice. This is particularly relevant when the clinical situation is not clear as is the case in ethically challenging situations. It is important to understand ethical principles, models, and decision-making frameworks to see how they can apply and give guidance when you are responding to the various situations that nurses encounter. Not all frameworks apply to all situations, and you will find some resonate with your personal values and professional practice more than others.
There are several ways to support ethical decision-making. Below you will find two documents that outline principles, values, and models for ethical decision-making. To begin, review both documents. Then work through at least two of the scenarios presented in the College and Association of Registered Nurses document using one of the frameworks presented.
Read the College and Association of Registered Nurses in Alberta, Ethical Decision-Making for Registered Nurses in Alberta: Guidelines and Recommendations. (2010). https://nurses.ab.ca/media/akubmqky/ethical-decision-making-for-rns-in-alberta-guidelines-and-recommendations-may-2010.pdf
