When most companies or other institutions hire new employees, they provide some sort of orientation that helps those new people acclimate to their environment. This process also allows the employer to articulate policies and procedures as well as establish expectations under fairly distraction-free conditions. In some places this amounts to a brief slideshow and encouragement to ask questions; in others, it is an elaborate and carefully structured boot camp in which new employees complete tax forms and sign nondisclosure agreements, listen to presentations on topics as varied as hazardous materials, sexual harassment, computer use policies, sick and vacation days, copier use, the organization hierarchy and culture, ethics, appropriate dress, email etiquette, reporting structures and expense account reconciliation, and undergo batteries of aptitude and problem-solving tests. The human resources professionals who design and execute these processes call this “onboarding.”
You will compile these documents into a well-written and well-designed portfolio you’ll upload to Blackboard as a Word Document by 11:59 on Sunday, July 3, 2022.
The Portfolio Project is worth 25% of your final course grade; the individual portfolio components will be weighted as follows:

Introductory Bio and Rhetorical Analysis –Although this bio is a brief introduction to yourself for a class, it also has a real-world counterpart: the bio page of a corporate website. When you join a corporate team, you’ll likely be asked to provide a brief paragraph and sometimes a photo of yourself for the company website. Your bio should focus on you as a professional but provide just enough personal details that we get to know you a bit as a person rather than just a name on the screen. For this assignment, a photo is optional, but if you do include one, choose carefully.
Your job is to first find a company where you can imagine working. Go to that company’s website, read the bios there, and write a brief paragraph rhetorically analyzing the company and the bios employees have written. Use the knowledge and understanding you have acquired from your rhetorical analysis to write a 100-word (approximately) professional biography appropriate for that company.
Application Letter—Locate a real job listing and compose a letter of application for the company that you have begun examining.
Memo –Craft a memo in which you propose a new project or focus for the company.
Portfolio Design– Design a professional-looking electronic portfolio which brings together the five separate components of this assignment into one holistic text.
