[SOLVED] The one-page summary guide to the theories
Please bring writing implements. You may bring your copy of the Adam Reich book with you – and the one-page summary guide to the theories that is available on the “course visuals” page. You’ll have the full class period to answer – and I will get there a little early and stay five minutes after if you need a little extra time to write. There will be two questions on the exam, so you’ll have 40 minutes per question.
On the exam questions, there should be no mystery about what I will ask about, in general: per the last several class sessions, we are focused on thinking through how the theories from the last section might (or might not) apply to cases. For Tuesday’s exam, as discussed, you should think about how those theories might/might not apply to Adam Reich’s book on the three hospitals that you have already read. In particular, the following brief guide should help you focus your studies over the next day and a half:
1) You should review Reich’s explanation of why the hospitals took – in his telling – different pathways. That is, why do they look different? He has a brief summary of the overall argument on that on page 10 of the Introduction. Then each section/individual hospital narrative has a fairly compact argument on that issue, usually nearer the beginning. It would be helpful to be familiar with his argument on that issue.
2) You should be able to think through how the different theories we’ve reviewed in this section would approach Reich’s cases and how they would attempt to explain it/them. What would they be looking for? How do you think they’d explain the organizational dynamics and outcomes that Reich describes?
3) You should be prepared to think through issues related to the “unit of analysis” discussion/lecture we had on the first day we talked about Dimaggio & Powell’s theory of institutional isomorphism.
