1. Surrealism and “The night face up”

What is  surrealism  and what elements in “La noche boca arriba” reflect this literary-artistic movement?

2. Parallel elements in the two worlds of “The Night Face Up”

“The night face up” creates a parallelism between the two worlds, that of the  motorcyclist  and that of the  moteca . Note that details in one world appear distorted (but somewhat similar) in the other world. For example, in the biker world, you have to follow the  traffic signs to move safely through the city streets , but in the moteca world, there is a ‘ secret road ‘ that only the motecas know to guide them through the jungle. and the shakers. Look for other details that link the two worlds in the story to explain how this parallel is made. 

3. Civilization and barbarism in “The night face up”

At various historical times, Hispanic American cultures have interpreted the history of the continent in terms of a supposed conflict between ‘ civilization’  and ‘ barbarism’ . That tradition is especially strong in Cortázar’s native Argentina. How is that thematic opposition represented in ‘La noche boca arriba’? What is Cortázar’s message in this story regarding this debate about the nature of Latin American cultures? Where is the ‘Hispanic American reality’ of the 20th century, in civilization or in barbarism?
