1. The main reading for this week’s topic is Judith Jarvis Thomson’s “A Defense of Abortion.”   Attached to this discussion question is a single-paragraph summary of Thomson’s main strategy in her article, along with two very brief excerpts from this famous essay.  (THE ARTICLE I ATTACHED IN THE FILEs)The two excerpts are essentially the thought experiments Thomson uses to bolster her argument: namely, that even if a fetus is to be considered human, abortion is STILL perfectly defensible.
What do you think of Thomson’s thought experiments? Do you think they are effective in establishing her position?  Why or why not?
2. A major theme of the Medical Humanities is to encourage the field of medicine to treat the human being in his or her totality: this is to say, not as a mere collection of symptoms, but as a unique perspective on the world. To be human is to have thoughts, feelings, emotions, and a self-understanding that may not be reducible to our mere biology. In a video under this week’s modules, Why Are Many Doctors Scared of Transgender Patients?(THE VIDEO THAT I PROVIDED THE LINK ABOVE), Kristie Overstreet addresses the distinction between “biological sex” and one’s “gender identity,” along with the idea of a full “spectrum of identities.”  A good place to review the video in regard to these issues is between 6:10 through 9:08.
List one or two ways in which the issues discussed by Overstreet may help to promote an understanding of the human being as more than our mere biology.
Or, as an alternative: Do you think that one day, human beings will be understood in completely biological terms?  Explain your answer.
