[SOLVED] The field of Molecular Biology

Nobel Laureate Assignment (due April 25, 2022)
The field of Molecular Biology has been shaped by the accomplishments of numerous Nobel Prize-winning scientists in the areas of Chemistry, Physiology and Medicine. To gain an appreciation of how important these contributions have been to the field, each
student will be randomly assigned one Nobel Laureate to research (see below for a partial list). The different aspects to be covered in this assignment are:
Section (1) – Introduction
Biographical background, education/training and research of the scientist prior to winning the Nobel Prize.
Section (2) – The Awarding of the Nobel Prize
Reasons why the scientist received the Nobel Prize
a) Succinctly state the discovery for which the Nobel Prize was awarded
b) In more detail, describe the nature of the discovery
c) Explain the significance of these finding(s).
What technical hurdles were overcome? What gaps in the field were filled in?
How has the discovery advanced the field of Molecular Biology?
Why did this work warrant a Nobel Prize?
Section (3) – Post-Nobel Prize Activity
Areas of study and accomplishments after receiving the Nobel Prize
Section (4) – Primary Paper Analysis
Among the scientist’s publications, identify the primary paper best associated with their
Nobel Prize. This will be a highly cited, landmark paper and is often the first report of
the Nobel Prize-winning discovery. For some Nobel Laureates, more than one paper may
be considered equally important for the award; in these cases, the student need only
choose one of the papers. If there are primary papers you would like to review but cannot
access, the instructor may be able to find them for you, so please ask. Upon choosing
your primary article, you must check with the instructor to ensure that it is suitable.
To some extent, the effort that you make in finding the appropriate paper will be reflected
in your grade. Do not send the instructor a long list of articles published by the Nobel
Laureate and expect to be told which is the most appropriate for the assignment.
For your chosen primary paper:
a) Provide the complete citation for the article at the beginning of this section.
b) Justify your paper choice. Why was this particular paper instrumental for the
scientist being awarded the Nobel Prize?
c) Describe the main aspects of the paper (similar to the Literature Summaries
completed throughout the semester, but in more detail):
What question(s) were being asked? What techniques were used to answer
these question(s)? What results were attained? What were the major
conclusions of the study?
d) Describe what you view as the major strengths and weaknesses of the paper.
Do not repeatedly cite your primary paper in the text of this section. It will be assumed
that you are discussing your chosen primary paper unless you indicate otherwise (ie. – if
you refer to another study, provide (Author et al., 2014) in the text and give the complete
citation in your reference section.)
Keep in mind that, depending on the era of your Nobel Laureate, the structure and style
of their publication may vary considerably from that of modern papers.
NOTE: This section will be graded more rigorously for BIO-683 students. There will be
higher expectations regarding the difficulty of the paper, the quality of the paper analysis,
and how well the above points are addressed.
Section (5) – Summary
Include a short paragraph summarizing and tying together the different aspects of
the assignment. Also state whether other articles published by the scientist were
instrumental for their receiving the Nobel Prize, or if the primary paper you chose was
the clear, major reason. Include your logic.
Section (6) – References
Remember to provide in-text citations for the statements you make in the
assignment. For these, use the format of the journal Cell, which gives (Author and
Author, 2018) or (Author et al., 2018). For your final References list, also follow the
format of the journal Cell. Refer to a relatively recent Cell article for correct formatting.
The word limit for this assignment is 3000 words (not including References section).
The amount of space devoted to each section will vary somewhat from student to student
(depending in part on the nature of the primary article chosen). However, use the scheme
on the next page as a guide to determine how much space to dedicate to each section.
Section (7) – Extra Component FOR BIO-683 STUDENTS ONLY:
A) Make one prediction as to which scientist(s) will be awarded a future Nobel
Prize in Medicine & Physiology or Chemistry.
B) Provide your rationale. What discoveries/contributions were made that
warrants their consideration for the Nobel Prize? Why are these so noteworthy and/or
how did these revolutionize their field of study?
C) Cite the primary article that you think best describes the research that is
worthy of Nobel prize consideration. Explain why you chose the paper. An analysis of
the paper is not required, but a very short description of the paper should be included.
D) This section has a maximum of only 300 words, so please choose your
scientist(s) and primary article carefully. It is worth 10% of your assignment grade.
