Students are required to write an Opinion/Editorial piece on a public health ethics topic of their choice. Students may put forward any position they wish. The piece will be graded on whether a central thesis has been developed, the thesis has been defended conceptually and/or scientifically, and the piece is written in a clear, coherent, and compelling style. The Op/Ed should be between 500 and 600 words (maximum). Although references will not be included when submitting the Op/Ed for publication, they must be included when it is turned in for class. References should be included on a separate page(s) in any citation format, and do not count toward the 600-word limit.
Opinion/Editorial pieces can be a powerful means of communicating ideas, framing key social issues, and proposing change. If/when you submit your Op/Ed for publication, be prepared for the possibility it will not be accepted. It is fine to reach high, but rejection rates will be greatest for publications like the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal. Acceptance rates are higher for publications like local and community newspapers (think about your hometown paper, for instance) or the Philly Inquirer. Other universities often have publications that are geared towards student work as well (Penn Bioethics Journal, Jefferson Medicine Forum).
