What is a marriage or prenuptial contract? It is working out the details of a couple’s relationship before they wed. It cannot take the place of the state marriage contract nor can it legally override any of the state contractual obligations. It is a supplement to the state contract and affords a couple the freedom and privacy to order their personal relationship as they wish. Personal contracts facilitate open and honest communication and help prospective partners clarify their expectations. Once the contract agreement has been reached, it serves as a guide for future behavior. Contracts also increase predictability and security by helping couples identify and resolve potential conflicts in advance.
Any topic may be handled in a personal contract, but such contracts for this course must cover the following:
Goals and expectations of each partner individually and as a couple
Work and career roles
Financial responsibilities: Income and expense handling and control
Disposition of prior debts; Property owned before and acquired after the contract
Responsibility for household tasks
Educational goals
Religion
Intimacy expectations
Relationships with family, friends, and others
Children? (how many, rearing practices and responsibilities, childcare arrangements, etc.)
Resolving disagreements
Changing and amending the contract
Dissolution of the relationship
INSTRUCTIONS: For the purposes of completing this assignment, you will need to create a “pretend” marriage contract that you would seriously consider implementing in the event you married. (For those students who have already taken the plunge, utilize the contact that you may already have in place or, if you could go back in time, how would you word that document?) A quality document will address (at a minimum) all of the topics above and will be at least two pages in length. This is your ORIGINAL creation – unique to you and your desires and expectations. Your work should not include any material that you’ve copied and pasted from another source. Your work should not include legal formatting or terminology that one might find online or elsewhere. This document must be typed using double-space, Times New Roman 12-point font, and 1” margins.
