Two-way communication is essential between the organization and the nurse leader. When an organization supports, appreciates, and allows for input and ideas from leaders and employees it allows for respect and smooth day-to-day operations in the organization. Another barrier may be changing. The acceptance of “new and fresh ideas which allows organizations to remain competitive in the market and supports the continuous quality improvement of the products or services they provide may create a barrier” (Thomas, 2018). When there is a need for changing policies and procedures in order to keep up with shifting trends and happenings in healthcare, it is always the most difficult and challenging period for leaders and employees. This can be extremely difficult, especially when longtime employees of the organization who are accustomed to old ways or modes of operation and have already adapted to the culture are expected to change overnight.
It is necessary that leaders understand the importance of changing the culture of an organization through proper communication guidelines, and policies. The leader will in turn help the staff to understand the change and the reason behind it. This is important because when “employees don’t understand why changes are happening, it can be a barrier to driving dedication commitment which may lead to resistance and poor productivity” (Galbraith, M., 2018). Positive communication and “organizational culture are displayed within an organization that is effective in creating meaningful and productive relationships and communication” (Thomas, 2018).
