Here’s my current outline for my conference paper about Molly of Denali:
Working thesis: Language use (incorporating Gwich’in and Yup’ik words into the English scripts) in the children’s show Molly of Denali goes beyond cultural representation to also suggest that there is a world only perceptible through Alaskan Native words. The episodes invite viewers, in Alaska and throughout North America, to glimpse that world (imagine themselves into the world?).
Main idea 1: Language is an important way to represent culture
the harm done to children in the past at schools that punished them for speaking Native languages (“Grandpa’s Drum”)
and the importance of reclaiming that language and traditional songs, even decades later
Main idea 2: People have the innate ability to mix languages together and decode new languages
Trini and her dad figuring out directions (“Best Birthday Ever”)
Molly mistaking Mongolian for a secret code (“Qyah Spy”)
Main idea 3: It’s important to learn concepts in their own languages
Different words for different types of snow (“Snow Jam”)
