English 2045 Essay 1 Prompt
For your essay in English 2045, you need to decide what aspect of the literature we have read thus far this semester intrigues you the most. You are going to choose any selection we have read so far, and you will focus on the literary piece and write about it. You will use the literary piece itself as your primary source. You WILL ONLY USE THE MOTLOW LIBRARY to do any research on this essay.
The themes for the works include love, war, death, identity, social conflict, evil, and sanity.
You can choose any of these works to write about from any angle you want. For example, you can write about the specific theme from the work and how it is represented, a characterization of one or more characters, irony, conflict, setting, or any other literary device in the work, and a plethora of other options.
You will search for information through the Motlow Library to support your ideas. I encourage you to write everything you know and think before you begin looking for source material to support your ideas.
This essay will be between 3 and 5 pages in length not including the Works Cited page. You must include parenthetical citations and a Works Cited page with this essay. You will not just write a summary of the piece. In your first paragraph, you must include the title and the author, a 2 to 3 sentence summary of the piece, AND your thesis statement.
A few things to note:
Poem titles should appear in quotation marks
Short story titles should appear in quotation marks
Play titles should appear in italics
The title for your essay cannot be the title of the literary work you are discussing
This essay should be in correct MLA format-If you need help with this, let me know.
Do NOT use any of the following in your essay:
Contractions (don’t, can’t, I’ll, it’s, etc.)
First and second person pronouns (I, me, mine, us, we, ours, our, you, yours)
Conversational language
You will submit your final draft to the Assignment folder in D2l by Monday, July 25, at 11:59 PM.
