Topic 1: Human Side of Science
How the human side of science played out in the remarkable discoveries (ethical responsibility of scientist, cooperation and competition of scientists, cross-disciplinary research, intuition/genius, creativity, Chinese and western science, personalities etc)?
Topic 2: Science and Truth/Knowledge
What are the limitations of scientific methods (e.g. idealization, observation, mathematization, experimentation, reductionism, systematic thinking, induction and deduction etc)?
Topic 3: Science and Society
How does culture influence the development of scientific knowledge and vice versa, how does science transform and revolutionize culture and society? Why did certain scientific discoveries occur when they did? Why is there a difference between ancient Chinese and Greek science?
Topic 3: Science and Value
How do science/technology shape people’s values and worldviews nowadays?
Do you think science/technology are universal, neutral and value-free?
Topic 5:
Suppose you are a CEO of a technology company. Please write an essay to describe how you will be benefit from the course, In Dialogue with Nature, in your company.
Topic 6: Free topic
If a student prefers free topic, it is better to consult with me beforehand.
Submission: Submit your paper in Word format (not PDF) via Blackboard. Due date: 23:55, 08 May 2021 (Sunday). For late submission, 10 marks (out of 100) will be deducted with each day of delay.
Formatting requirements:
The topics serve only as a guideline for your essay. The main argument should respond to the topic you choose.
Follow the ‘TP format.docx’ templates. The filename should be in this format: TP-GFN1000-YourName.doc/docx (e.g., TP- GFN1000-Da Ziran.doc/docx).
Word limit: 1300-1500 for English, 1900-2300 for Chinese (Do not exceed word limits).
Generally, relate at least two texts (from Part II and Part III) in this course (Text 3a and Text 3b is one Text).
Your term paper needs a good title (-1% for no good title).
Your understanding and reflection of the texts are crucial for a good grade. Reflect, relate, compare and discuss, do not simply list the truth.
GFN encourages students to engage in direct dialogue with the texts without relying on secondary sources. No marks will be deducted due to lack of references to secondary sources.
