HIS 101 H082
Final Exam
General Instructions
This Final Exam focuses on chapters 9-11, 13, 18, and the parts of chapters 14-17 in the Syllabus, in the course textbook, and the Zoom lectures, though the Exam is comprehensive. It is what is called an open-notes, open-book, take-home exam. That means you can consult your notes (from the Zoom lectures), and the textbook chapters, and you may spend as much time as you need to complete the exam, so long as it is turned in (as a single MSWord or Google document) to the Canvas assignment portal by the deadline. The portal will open at 1 PM on Thursday, May 5, and will close at 11:59 PM on Friday, May 6. I cannot accept late submissions, so do not wait until the last moment to turn it in. You cannot use direct quotations, and all answers must be in your own words. Do not commit Plagiarism.
Organize your answers as a single document, with 3 sections or parts, for each of the essays, just like you did for the Midterm. Properly format your Word doc (which does not need an interpretive title, though each of the three Essays does require an interpretive title). Your header info should be single-spaced, but your answers (text) should be double-spaced, and pages numbered, just like these General Instructions.
The Final Exam will be graded on a 100-point scale. Proper formatting, organization, punctuation and grammar (quality of writing), and following directions, will count for 10 points. Each of the three Essays will count for 30 points. There also is an Extra Credit that can count up to 3 points.
Final Examination
Each essay should be well-organized, with a clear beginning, middle and end, and should be at least 5 paragraphs, and should have an interpretive title. Therefore, your document should have 3 parts, with each clearly marked.
Essay 1
Explain in detail the impact of religion on the development of World Civilizations (world history) from earliest times to the 1600s CE, in particular the civilizations we have encountered on our ‘bus tour’. Your essay should discuss 3 major religions (and thus 3 civilizations). Remember to discuss specific civilizations and to provide several examples of important consequences or changes, or, focus on a particular (broad) region and discuss how several major religions brought changes in civilizations in that one region through time. The best answers also will consider the historical significance of ‘heresy’ and ‘blasphemy’ (that is, religious conflict). Do not just write a vague answer, and do not write on just a single religion. Do focus on change over time, and give specific historical examples to support your discussion.
Essay 2
Throughout the semester, we have discussed various civilizations and their Golden Ages before about 1800 CE. Please select three civilizations from three different time periods and three different regions of the the world and describe and compare (and explain) their individual Golden Ages. Be sure and include what characterizes a Golden Age, how factors from each civilization encompassed its Golden Age, and why each civilization’s Golden Age came to an end. The best answers will include significant historical examples as well as basic chronology (‘when’).
Essay 3
Explain why and how Europeans “turned west” after about 1400 CE. Your answer should have three main reasons, with specific historical examples, and should discuss three main consequences for world history.
Extra Credit: Up to three points. Briefly discuss 3 ways that learning History in college is different than in high school. Up to three reasons.
Deadline for submission as a MSWord or Google doc, via the Canvas assignment portal: Friday, May 6, 11:59 PM. Do not wait until the last moment to submit your Final Exam.
