Film 3440J: Film Criticism Practicum
Workshop 7: The Final Essay
Value: 40 Points
Write a complete essay on any of the films we have watched this semester. Your essay should be
4-5 pages long 12 point font, double spaced.
You must cite any outside sources you use in the essay.
What should the essay include?
1. A strong thesis.
2. A clear and compelling introduction that lets your reader know what you will be arguing about the film.
3. A body that covers a number of different aspects of the films in relation to your central argument. Each section of the body should include a concrete piece of textual evidence and explicitly link that evidence to your central argument.
4. A conclusion that sums up your argument and, perhaps, suggests other aspects of the film
that you did not have space to cover.
5. Textual evidence (including description of narrative, character, mise-en-scene, cinematography, and editing).
6. Proper terminology.
Be sure to read both the Course Notes and Writing Spotlight for Module 7 before you begin this
assignment.
