RTV142 – Assignment 2 – Summer 2022
Fiction Pilot De-Construction
DUE Day of Class 5
SUMMARY: Television series, whether fiction or ‘factual’, are designed around a
format. The beats are moments which propel the story from the hook through to the
climax. The format of a show will generally have the same elements every episode in
the same order. However, the specific story beats within that format will vary from
episode to episode.
In this assignment you are asked to deconstruct a fictional TV series to identify: 1)
the series format (i.e. how does the series work; what elements are the same every
episode); and 2) the individual beats that make up a particular episode.
It is worth 5% of your final mark.
WHAT TO DO:
Review the Template for Beat Sheet reviewed in class and posted in BlackBoard.
You will be provided with the pilot script for a TV series that is available on a streaming
service to which you have access.
1) You will read the pilot script
2) You will watch the pilot episode
3) You will watch two other first season episodes of the same TV show
2
YOU WILL PROVIDE AN ANALYSIS OF THE SHOW, ADDRESSING THE BELOW:
A) The Pilot Script:
Identify the show and writer/creator of the pilot episode. Provide a logline of the pilot
episode.
How is the show structured?
How long (time/pages) for each scene, act, episode?
When do the act breaks come? How many storylines are there? How are they dealt
with? When are the main characters introduced? When is the “situation” of the episode
introduced?
Complete a Beat Sheet for the complete pilot episode, following the beat sheet model
provided for the first act of the Dave movie (ie. Scene heading and brief summary of
important dramatic moments)
B) Compare the script with the pilot episode –
How are the two versions different? Be specific. What are your theories why they are
different? Was it for length, story or other reasons?
C) Compare the 3 televised episodes –
Identify (title/episode number) and provide a short logline for the other two episodes.
What are common elements in each episode in terms of structure, storylines,
act/episode length etc?
The Assignment will be evaluated on how well it follows the above instructions. As well,
it will specifically be evaluated on Spelling, Grammar and Syntax, and the Story Beats
identified.
