The dictionary tells us only so much about a word. Can you describe the meaning of a word as you understand it? In “Love Is a Fallacy,” Max Shulman defines love as unrelated to logic. Stephen Jay Gould emphasizes the hazards of defining animal behavior according to human characteristics or principles. Dick Gregory defines “Shame” by describing childhood experiences and their consequences. In “On Morality,” Joan Didion presents her own definition of “morality,” and she argues that presenting political objectives as “moral imperatives” is dangerous to society.
For this essay, you should define a word according to your perception of its meaning. Please provide a definition from the Merriam Webster.com Dictionary somewhere in your essay, and please include an entry for the dictionary on your Works Cited page. Instructions will be provided in class. In your essay, you can elaborate upon the dictionary definition, expand upon it, and possibly even refute it. Feel free to include examples, narration, comparison and contrast, or any other rhetorical strategy you believe will help you achieve your goal, which should be to present a clear, organized, coherent, and complete definition of your chosen word. Remember, your paper should be argumentative; you must attempt to convince your reader that your view of the chosen word is the “right” one.
