Project 2: Carpenter Estates Office Building: Write a Project Management Plan
for the Design of Carpenter Estates Office Building.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
1. Introduction
This project sets out for students to develop a Project Management Plan (PMP) for the design of the
Carpenter Estates Office Building (Graduation project PDE3730). The project will require students to
develop various programs and documents required as part of a comprehensive PMP for activities
relevant to RIBA Stages 0-4.
You need to write a report about your learning of various aspects of Project Management discussed
during the module. You need to apply the topics we discuss to the design of the Carpenter Estates Office
Building. Your PMP should also include a: work breakdown structure (WBS), Stakeholder Management
Plan, Risk Register and Risk Management Plan, Health & Safety Management Plan, Schedule and
Resource Management. This needs to be based on the RIBA Plan of Work.

2. Task
The main task is to prepare the Project Management Plan assuming you are appointed as ‘Project
Manager’.
As a project manager of the project, produce a REPORT to the client highlighting how the project will
be managed using innovative approaches for its successful completion and include a project plan. Your
response should include but is not limited to, the following aspects of the project management.
• Project Management considerations, framework including the processes and work break down
structure
• Integration of sustainability considerations in the project management, such as waste
management plan
• Stakeholder Management Plan
• Communication plan
• Fee management plan
• Review of management structure, procurement route, and type of Contract
• Construction sequencing and progress monitoring
• Potential risks and their management
• CDM/ fire / health & safety and accessibility management
• Sustainability planning and Management (inc. analysis studies, how affect operations, FM).
• Control of changes in the project
In addition to the above, you need to include how BIM can improve the process of managing your
project based on the EIR and BEP documents that you produced during the first term. Also, you can use
tools such as Navisworks – which you will learn this term – for better delivery of project sequencing and
cost planning.
The project plan should be in the form of a Gantt Chart using planning software such as Gantt Project
(Open source and free). Your report should be a critical appraisal with justification and not a simple
repetition of the factual aspects. It should be clearly organized and presented. It must be fully referenced
using the Harvard system of referencing and all the web sources should be clearly identified. References
should be collated at the end of the report.
2. Aims – The aims of this project are to:
• 2.1. Facilitate students learning through a whole lifecycle project enhancing their team working skills
• 2.2. Develop the ability to navigate between the RIBA Stages.
• 2.3. Evaluate the responses to construction project management strategies.
• 2.4. Develop an understanding of the principles of project management.
• 2.5. Demonstrate understanding of risk management and stakeholder management strategies.
