A. Cognitive Dissonance Scenarios
Overview
The theory of cognitive dissonance describes how we recognize this condition and have the urge to resolve the conflict by changing either our attitudes or our behaviors. This discussion provides a number of examples of cognitive dissonance and asks students to comment on how they may be resolved.
Review the following situations of cognitive dissonance and give opinions on how people may resolve them using the “cognitive dissonance” research paradigm.
Scenario 1: A religious group believed that California would break off and fall into the ocean. The prophecy was dead-on certain that this would happen very soon. So, they all moved to Kentucky. When California did not fall into the ocean as expected, did the group become weaker in their beliefs or stronger in support of their leaders?
Scenario 2: A political group would go to the doors of people in a neighborhood in pairs and try to teach others about their positions and hand out pamphlets and written material. When they experienced rejection and disdain from the people at the doors, did they go back and change their beliefs and behavior or did they have greater faith and belief in their cause?
Scenario 3: A man had very traditional beliefs that women should be secondary in the relationship and be basically second-class citizens. He met his new girlfriend and was very attracted to her. She urged him to attend a group meeting or women’s March demonstration in favor of women’s activism and feminism. He went along with her because he was falling in love. Do you think his views on women’s rights would tend to stay the same, get more conservative, or tend to become more in favor of women’s rights?
