By the summer of 2015, no professional sports team was more celebrated or despised than the New England Patriots.
The ever-winning team was idolized in New England and loathed just about everywhere else. Over the years, the Patriots had been caught in a series of embarrassing incidents including the murder conviction of a star player and the taping of an opponent’s play-call signals. Just before the 2015 Super Bowl, they were charged with deflating football pressure so that quarterback Tom Brady could get a better grip.
“Deflategate” became a national obsession. An outside investigator concluded that the Patriots were guilty as charged. The NFL fined them $1 million, took away two draft picks and suspended Brady for four games. Team co-owner Robert Kraft angrily denied the charges and defended his Patriots.
In the end Brady had his suspension overturned in a federal court appeal; the golden boy refused to be “deflated.”
You will need to address the following from a PR standpoint:
Point out mistakes that Kraft might have made in his approach,
Provide advice they would give the Patriots for an “ethics makeover,” and
Explain how they would advise Kraft.
