Academic Essay Guidelines- B Bus Supply Chain and Transport Management
(Transport and the SC & Leadership and Communications)
This document describes the principal structures and contents of an academic essay. (Title Page,
Introduction, Main Body, Conclusion & Bibliography) It outlines what should be contained in each of
these sections and it also provides guidance how to present your evidence. This is issued as an aide
to help organise and present your academic writing in a sequential, coherent, and articulate form.
At the outset, it is important to note that this aide is not exhaustive. It cannot be exhaustive for
several reasons. Sometimes owing to the nature of the question posed, your essay may require
‘additional’ sections such as a technical description, diagrams, or images to describe, outline or
complete your answer. Also, a section for ‘Recommendations’ or a ‘Road Map’ may be required
following your conclusions. For example, if you have arrived at your conclusions and there are
actions that need to be taken on foot of your analysis. You should clearly recommend what these

actions are in a Recommendations section. Alternatively, if you need to present a ‘Road Map’ for
objectives along a proposed course of action include the ‘Road Map’ at the end. So, do not be overly
prescriptive in your approach however the principal sections below should always be included.
Title Page:
The title page should outline the essay’s title. The title should be in a larger print than your normal
written text. The title should be centred near the top of the page. Your full name and your student
identity number should follow (below the title in a lesser font size). Lower down on the title page,
you can enter; The Course Title, The Module Code (if applicable), the Name of the Instructor and the
Essay Submission Date.
Introduction:
Your introduction has three objectives:
a) It must introduce the theme and subject matter of the essay.
b) It presents your hypothesis and provides signposts to the reader to outline the approach or
argument the essay will adopt.
c) The introduction will also tell the reader how the essay will be structured.
You can introduce the essay topic by providing some brief background, relevant information or
context related to the question posed. The significance of the topic can be introduced through a
brief story, some facts or statistics that engage and focus the reader’s initial attention. Once you
have focused the reader’s attention, present the thesis or argument of the essay. Depending on the
complexity of your thesis this may consist of one or more sentences. Remember: a thesis statement
is not the same as your topic (i.e., something you want to talk about). A thesis is a theory, a view a
proposal or an argument generally reduced to a short paragraph containing one or more points that
are related. You should end your introduction by giving the reader a preview of the main assertions
and reasoning you will make to authenticate and validate the statements made in your thesis.
Main Body:
In the body of your essay, you must establish and demonstrate the relevant information and the
evidence behind the premise. You must also through evidence of research and referencing develop
the route of your ‘exploration and argument’ to your thesis. It is essential that this part of the essay
is developed and presented in a coherent, logical, and orderly manner. You should follow the
preview that you have presented in your introduction, but you must bring along your own
‘additional researched and relevant information and a probing consideration. The overall goal of this
section is to develop your analysis, present it and where necessary defend and support your
argument. This is the main section of the essay and it must be able ‘carry its own weight’ in evidence
and reasoned argument.
Structurally, the body of your academic essay will consist of a series of paragraphs that may or may
not contain paragraph headings (signposts). Each paragraph, whilst logically following the previous
one as part of the overall argument, should develop one significant theme that can help to inform
the reader and help you develop and further your overall thesis.
The paragraph can introduce a specific subject area either as a topic or with a sentence or a
statement. It should then expand on the theme within the paragraph with evidence or examples. An
explanation or argument can show how this paragraph specific subject area, coupled with analysis,
contributes to the specific point you are making within the paragraph and to the thesis. Paragraphs
should normally consist of several sentences rather than one, long sentence.
Conclusion:
The conclusion is designed to bring together your essay’s main points and to reassert or emphasize
the strength of the thesis or argument. A conclusion is more than a summary. In your conclusion, it is
important to indicate why there is merit to your thesis or argument and what has been shown
because of your investigation or exploration of the topic.

Bibliography:
Most academic essays require a bibliography at the end of the paper that includes all sources
(written or otherwise) used in the composition of your essay. Sources are listed alphabetically by
author’s name or by corporate/government name and are single-spaced.
Notes (Footnotes or Endnotes) (only if appropriate): All academic essays will use information found
in books, scholarly articles, electronic sources, or other sources. All academic essays must also
inform the reader of which specific sources this information came from. This source of this
information is “cited” in “notes” – either “footnotes” (which appear at the bottom of the page) or
“endnotes” (which can appear on a separate page near the end of the essay).
Finally – Plagiarism: what it is.
Plagiarism means taking another person’s work or ideas and presenting them as your own. It can
take many forms, including:
a) using another person’s words without enclosing them in quotation marks.
b) using another person’s words without citing their author and source with a footnote or endnote;
c) paraphrasing improperly. This occurs when you change a few words or rearrange the order of a
sentence but continue to rely on the basic structure of your source’s phrasing. Acceptable
paraphrasing requires that you use your own words and sentence structure.
d) using the original ideas of another person without citing them.
e) submitting the same work for two different courses.
f) submitting work written by someone other than yourself.
g) submitting work that has been corrected by someone else.
