[SOLVED] BIOMEDICAL INSTRUMENTATION

[SOLVED] BIOMEDICAL INSTRUMENTATION

FINAL RESEARCH PAPER – REVISED
BME 210 BIOMEDICAL INSTRUMENTATION

Project Explanation
This will be a multipart project that cannot be done in a single weekend. It will take multiple weeks to complete this project and I suggest you spend no less than 3 weeks working on it.
The Biomedical Instrumentation Main Project will consist of three deliverables:
Research paper covering a single biomedical instrument.
PowerPoint designed to teach someone about the equipment.
Presentation to the class of the subject and the PowerPoint.

Research
Choose a biomedical instrument to work on from the list. You may not research one that someone else has already chosen. Your research will include, but is not limited to, answers for the following questions:
What tier is instrument, what is this instrument’s primary function and how does it work?
What sections of a hospital or clinic would this instrument be located in and why?
Name three manufacturers of this instrument? Please include the specific make, model, new and used price for each instrument.
What are some common problems and/or failures regarding this unit? How would a BMET repair and mitigate this?
What are the Preventative Maintenance schedules for this equipment (after each use, semi-annually, annually) and where can it be found in the operator or service manual?
What is something specific that you would need to check when performing Preventative Maintenance on this unit? (e.g., Temperature reading is properly calibrated)
What equipment would a BMET use to test and calibrate this instrumentation?
If any, does this instrument need to be used in conjunction with another biomedical instrument?
What are the medical safety concerns for users of this equipment, how injury might occur, and how are those concerns addressed (ex: exposure to harmful radiation, burns, etc.)?
What are the medical safety concerns for patients when using this equipment and how are those concerns addressed (microshock, burns, allergic reaction, etc.)?
What are the government regulations and industry standards that apply to this equipment?
What organization(s) exists specifically for information, education, and training about this biomedical instrument?
Interviews
Interviews should be no fewer than 10 questions on this topic and no more than 15. They must be relevant to the paper and the biomedical instrumentation being researched and discuss instrument specific information, from that person’s perspective, that isn’t in books or the internet. A short introduction must be first, followed by the transcript, and concluded with a summary. If you don’t know how to conduct a short interview, then Google it or look for instructions on YouTube. There are 3 options to choose from based on your ability to interview someone.
Option 1: Conduct a short interview with any BMET, Clinical engineer, technician, healthcare professional, administrator, or advocate about this instrumentation. You should try to get permission to do an audio recording for later transcription. You will not be submitting a copy of the recording.
Option 2: Conduct a short interview with someone who has had this instrumentation used on them for diagnosis or treatment of an illness. Discuss what the doctor was trying to find or rule out with a discussion of the patient’s experience, from beginning to end, concerning a time when this device was used on them. You should try to get permission to do an audio recording for later transcription. You will not be submitting a copy of the recording.
Option 3: Find two video interviews that already exist that are five minutes or less. You must submit the link to the video recording and a transcript with time stamps is required. These videos must be no more than 3 years old.
Applications
Discuss two other classes you are currently taking and something you learned in each that applies to your biomedical instrumentation. You must show specifically how that knowledge can be applied. Example:
Electrical Circuits 2 Application
This electrical circuits 2 course has taught me how to read and interpret the electrical schematic blood pressure monitors and one common thing I noticed in blood pressure monitor schematics is the use of Wheatstone Bridges in the power supply. These bridges affect the power supply by…
Psychology 1 Application
My Psych 1 course is applicable to the X-ray machine I am researching. I learned from psychology about some of the phobias hospital patients may have including Xraymachinophobia and that hospital staff should be made aware of this when using X-ray machines. This phobia could cause a patient to freak out in the X-ray room. Common symptoms to look out for are bugged out eyes, a need to solve for x, misuse of x-ray vision, …
PowerPoint Presentations
The best way to learn is by doing and mastery of the subject is demonstrated by teaching.
After writing your paper, you will create a PowerPoint presentation for submission, and then for use to teach/present your research to the class and answer questions from them. Other members of the engineering faculty, and from your other courses might be present so do a good job!
You may create a PowerPoint with a complete audio narration instead of a live presentation.
Individual student presentations of all types should be 10 to 20 minutes. Group presentations should be 15 to 30 minutes.
Topics
Choose one of the topics below. You may not choose instrumentation that someone else has already chosen.

Requirements
You must include relevant pictures and diagrams, label each one (ex: Fig.1 Sensor placement), and provide the source/link where the image came from in a section named Image References. See format.
You will need APA format for each quote and citation. No more than 25% of your paper can be from quotes and citations.

Research Paper Format
(No cover page and Times New Roman font for everything, similar to midterm format)
TITLE (Style = Heading 1)
Your name
Date
Introduction (Style =Heading 2)
Give a brief intro about the topic and tell people why it is important (Font 12pt)
Research (Style =Heading 2)
Write about your research on the biomedical instrument in a flowing manner. This is not a HW problem where you answer each question one by one. The questions are guides to help you with your content and should not appear in the paper…only the answers should. This is the same as the midterm.
Interviews (Style =Heading 2)
Introduction (Style = Heading 3)
Interview transcript (Style = Heading 3)
Summary (Style = Heading 3)
Application 1 (Style =Heading 2)
This is where you will discuss your application from another course
Application 2 (Style =Heading 2)
This is where you will discuss your application from a second course
Summary (Style =Heading 2)
Summarize everything you wrote about here.
Glossary (Style =Heading 2)
Add instrument specific words and definitions and any new terms we did not discuss in class.
