[SOLVED] Art movements are transforming Europe..

[SOLVED] Art movements are transforming Europe..

Final Exam

For this exam you will answer two of the following four questions. Each question is worth fifty points.

1. In this class we have studied the term encounter a few times. List and then summarize at least three different encounters in modern Asian art (since 1800). Are all these encounters the same? If they are different, how are they so? If they are similar, how might they be? Begin by defining the term “encounter” in your own words. You may use any material in D2L to support your answer.

2. What art movements are transforming Europe between 1750-1850? Are these art/style movements traveling to Asia? If yes, how do they come to Asia? How do they become visible in the work of Asian artists?  More importantly, how do Asian artists transform these European styles to suit local needs? You may use any material in D2L to support your answer.

3. The Brutalist style becomes synonymous with modernity. In fact, modern architecture is defined by its simplicity both stylistic and material. Who is one of the chief proponents of this new style and how do they illustrate their vision? Do they do so in Europe and America or is their modernist masterpiece designed and constructed in Asia? Does Asia become “modern” by adapting this new architecture? If yes, how and if not, how? You may use any material in D2L to support your answer.

4. Two female artists, Pan Yuliang and Amrita Shergil, will train and work in Paris during the interwar years. Can we classify their work as “modern,” if so, how? Now that we can confidently attest to the modern nature of Yuliang and Shergil’s work how do they reconcile race and gender in their art? Why are they focusing on both these aspects? You may use any material in D2L to support your answer.

5. What is Socialist Realism? How does this very European, i.e. Soviet/Russian, form of propaganda art reach China? How does the People’s Republic of China utilize and deploy Socialist Realist art. You may use any material in D2L to support your answer.

When is this due?

The final assignment is due on April 8, 10:25 hrs (10:25 am in the morning).

How are you going to respond to the prompts?

You must adhere to the following instructions:

1. Each answer must be at least 1250 words, i.e. 5 pages  double-spaced. Try and aim for this length, but if needed feel free to go over 5 pages.

2. Please use either Times New Roman or Garamond, 12 point, with standard margins for your answer.

3. Each essay must have a title. Though not required you may use subheadings as well.

4. You must use five sources in each essay. These sources must be cited in the same manner as you have been citing in the Participation Forums, i.e. in brackets with author last name and page number. Ex: (Jackson & Jaffer, pp. 14) or (Guha-Thakurta, pp. 30).

5. You should not consult external sources, but if you feel the need to do more research, that is okay. If you use material from other sources they must be cited as well. Failure to do so will result in plagiarism and a grade of zero on the assignment.

How will you be graded?

GRADING FOR THESE ESSAYS WILL BE BASED ON THREE SCALES: A (100-80), B (79-70), AND C (69-60).
