Annotated Bibliography Assignment Overview
Introduction: An annotated bibliography is a list of sources with annotations summarizing and analyzing those
sources. An annotated bibliography can be a process document (one that helps you complete a larger project) or an
end in itself. As a process document, the AB allows you to become familiar with the current scholarly
conversations about a specific topic and gather information about your sources (author, title, medium, etc.).
Through correctly cited summaries, direct quotes, and paraphrases, you will create writing that discusses how you
will use each source in your work. Finally, an AB helps you organize your research to make it more easily
accessible as you write. So, while the AB is a process document, ultimately you will submit it in your final
portfolio for a grade.
Requirements for First Draft:
● The first version of your AB should be at least 3 full pages long. Each page will consist of one entry in the
AB. In each annotation, you must use summary, direct quotation, and paraphrase (with in-text citations) as
you cover that particular source. For more information on how to use summary, direct quotation, and
paraphrase, please read 14d in Easy Writer.
● In this version, you will annotate three scholarly sources. This means the sources were published in a peerreviewed journal or book published by a university press. This version must also include your ARE
research question at the top of the page above your first entry. This scholarly question motivates and
focuses your research and its answer will become your thesis statement. A good research question is
something that scholars would be interested in asking, is specific, attempts to extend the scholarly
conversation in some new direction, is not easily answered (it requires research to answer), and often starts
with how/why/what as a way to lead to a complex answer (thesis statement).
Requirements for Second Draft (due during final Peer Review at the end of the semester):
● For the final draft of the AB, you will add two sources for a total of five, four of which must be scholarly.
In addition, below your research question you will now include your full thesis statement, which should
consist of a main claim and 3-4 sub-claims that support it.
This assignment must be in 12pt Times New Roman font (every single character), double-spaced (no more, no
less), with your last name and page numbers in the top right corner (in the header). This paper must be MLAformatted, with an appropriately organized bibliography. You must in-text cite. Refer to Purdue OWL for more
information on MLA citations. Please proofread. Refer to the rubric for grading guidelines and email me if you
have any questions.
Form: You will list the header information for each annotation as it would appear on a Works Cited. Follow the
guide from 184-186 in From Inquiry to Academic Writing. The first part of each annotation is summary: present the
source’s key ideas or claims. The second part is analysis: describe how the key claims are supported with evidence,
or how the different parts contribute to the whole. The third part is a determination of relevance to your own
argument: does the source provide context the reader needs to understand your own argument, that you can include
in your ARE’s introduction or literature review paragraph? Does it support one or more of your subclaims? Does it
act as a counterargument you will refute, or help you to recognize a multiplicity of perspectives? This third section
should also indicate how you see your sources interacting; this is the basis of synthesis.
Challenges: Your AB will be a working document. It will evolve over time and some entries may continue to be
revised, or even deleted, and other sources may come into play later in the process. This means you must attend to
and revise the AB over the course of the semester, because it will be a document included in the final portfolio. The
five sources you choose to include by the end of the semester will be ones that have been incorporated into your
Argumentative Researched Essay and/or the Public Opinion Piece.
