[SOLVED] An argumentative essay discussing two texts
Essay
Core Philosophy
Goal
Write me an argumentative essay discussing two texts, one contemporary and one classic form Unit II, and making your own original response to the subject at issue.
Once you have found a contemporary article, choose one of our class readings from Unit II, something relevant to the contemporary article. For example, perhaps the two readings both talk about the same issue but take different positions. Alternatively, perhaps they complement each other in some interesting way you want to show us.
You’ll need to tell me what both texts are saying. Give me good sensitive exegesis. Quote each author show us you have read closely (4-6 quotes is probably a good rule).
That’s the exegesis portion. After the exegesis, you’ll offer your own response. In your response, you might want to raise an objection to someone’s position, or show that his argument is unconvincing. Or you might want to show how we can develop an author’s viewpoint to apply in some other area of interest.
One other thing. At some point in your essay, you should formulate an argument as a modus ponens or modus tollens. Show me you can employ this tool in your writing. Where should this go? There are basically three options. First, the modus ponens/modus tollens could be a summary of an argument in one of your texts. Second, it could be a summary of your own argument. Third, it could be a summary of some argument the texts you chose are responding to. Either way, this needs to show up somewhere, and you need to show good judgment as to where.
Length
Strict maximum: 1200 words.
Predicted minimum: 1000 words.
Only the maximum is strict. And I mean very strict. This will help you practice writing with conciseness and revising with diligence.
Format
Times new roman. 12-point font. Double-spaced. On the top, put the title, your name, and your class time. For citation, use MLA. Give me a works cited, but it just needs to have on it your contemporary article. Since your classic source will be an excerpt, I won’t make you track down the details. But make sure you look up how to cite correctly an online source, both for in-text and for the works cited.
Grading
I will grade this with four standards in mind:
1. Writing—a clear and polished style, the product of careful revision, and not exceeding the word maximum.
2. Exegesis—thoughtful handling of quoted material, a strong interpretive case using well-chosen textual evidence.
3. Modus ponens/modus tollens—competent use of these argument patterns for summarizing some important argument in the essay.
4. Original response—a thoughtful, carefully argued original response to the issue at hand.
5. Format—competent use of MLA for citation purposes. Follows my other formatting guidelines.
