Description:
The purpose of writing a critical analysis of a sociological work is to interpret, evaluate and critique it for its theoretical, empirical, and methodological contribution to the discipline of sociology. Critical means to express an evaluation of the texts. Analysis means to break down and study the parts. Moreover, a critical analysis provides you with the chance to utilize the knowledge you have gained throughout your tenure at CSUB by exploring the sociological implications of arguments and findings. The reflection should be size 12 font, Times New Roman, double-spaced, and 5-6 pages in length. In addition to structure, organization, and logic, papers will be graded for grammar, spelling, and content. When citing information that is not your own it should be in ASA format. Reminder: Late papers will not be accepted unless you have a serious illness or hospitalization. If this occurs, you will need to provide a note from your doctor or your child’s doctor (in the case of a sick child).
Objectives:
In this paper you need to identify and explain the author’s major arguments and
findings.
2) In this paper you need to provide an analysis and critique of the author’s arguments, theoretical perspective, research methods, and findings.
3) In this paper you need to discuss the sociological implications of the findings for individuals and groups (explain the interrelationship between social structure and individual/group experiences and outcomes).
4) In this paper you need to examine the findings as they relate to your life experiences (do the data make sense in your experience?).
5) In this paper you need to offer possible solutions to the social problem the book is addressing.
Grading:
Introduction: Students are expected to introduce the book, include a summary and description of the work, and include a clear thesis statement. The reader should leave the introduction knowing what the rest of the paper is going to be about. (5 points)
Presenting the arguments: This should include a discussion of the author’s major arguments and findings. Remember to include citations when using ideas from sources. (No more than one page) (5 points)
An evaluation of the presented arguments, theoretical perspectives, and research methodologies: Includes evaluating presented arguments by examining evidence and offering sociologically substantive critiques [positive or negative] of the book. This includes using information from previous textbooks and/or scholarly journal articles. (20 points)
Sociological insights: Discuss the sociological implications of the findings for individuals and groups (explain the interrelation between social structure and individual/group experiences and outcomes). Examine the findings as they relate to your own life experiences (do the data make sense in your own experience?) and offer possible solutions to the social problem the book is addressing. (10 points)
Conclusion: Students are expected to conclude their paper by summarizing what they discussed in the paper and their overall evaluation of the work. (5 points)
Organization, Logic, Grammar and Spelling – Students are expected to present the subject in an organized fashion. The paper should be clear and transition from one main thought into the next main thought. The paper should include correct grammar/spelling and ASA citation. (5 points)
