SHORT ASSIGNMENT #1: THE SUMMARY
“The Emperor’s Giraffe”

A summary is a brief restatement in your own words of a longer text. It identifies and contextualizes the text, explains the thesis/argument, main ideas and conclusions. It also explains the structure of the argument (when applicable). A summary does not analyze or evaluate a text; you should not give your own opinions in a summary.

For your summary of this article, start by identifying the author, source and main idea in the first sentence. Then discuss the key ideas of the article, paying attention to the general structure and being sure not to get lost in detail. But do include enough detail to make your summary useful to your reader. Be sure to include the conclusions reached in the article.

Length: ½ – 1 page (200-250 words) typed, double spaced, MLA format
