Instructions:

Make sure you use at least six sources, three of which must be different from class literature. At least one source must be published in the last two years. And all of your sources must be peer-reviewed and/or from reputable magazines that cite and comment on peer-reviewed research published elsewhere.

This is an APA paper and the word count is between 1500-2000 words.

Topics:

1. Northoff claims that the self is neuro-social in nature. What does this mean and is his position convincing to you? Defend your position with the use of pertinent literature and examples.

2. What does Neisser’s paper on five kinds of self-knowledge tell us about the nature of self? Make sure you come up with a specific thesis of your own. Do not just reiterate Neisser’s position or follow it verbatim. Defend your position with the use of pertinent literature and examples.

3. Based on the literature we have covered on depersonalization and your own research, is there a way of explaining depersonalization at the psychological and neuroscientific level in a manner that the two levels relate to each other? In other words, is there a neuroscience of depersonalization and does it inform the psychological level of description and possible treatments? Defend your position with the use of pertinent literature and examples.

4. Considering the different pathologies of self we have studied in class and their relationship to the brain and body, is the brain and the rest of the body the substrate, or underpinning, of self? If so, what does this mean for the use of concepts such as “soul,” “mental,” “spirit”? Defend your position with the use of pertinent literature and examples.

5. Considering what we have learned in class thus far, how does it inform your role as a future healthcare provider? Make sure to come up with a specific thesis in light of this broader question and defend it with the use of pertinent literature and examples.

6. You can also come up with your own research project but make sure you consult with me prior to writing.
