Philosophy Assignment #7
In Part IV 2 (pp. 117-21) Socrates describes the conditions that the Rulers would have to live under, and the benefits (or lack of) they would stand to gain from ruling. Adeimantus asks Socrates (419a) “…how would you answer the objection that you aren’t making your Guardians particularly happy?” and expands on the question over the rest of that paragraph. Socrates answers that question over the remainder of the section.
In your own words answer the following:
1) What arrangements are the Guardians expected to live under, and why does Socrates want to impose those conditions?
2) Why does Adeimantus presume the Guardians would be unhappy?
3) What does Socrates say in response to Adeimantus’ challenge?
4) Putting yourself in the position of one of the Republic’s Guardians (Rulers) would you accept Socrates’ response to Adeimantus’ question? Give your reasons.
