Paper 1–Narrative Assignment
Paper #1: Narrative Assignment:
Narratives are about something the author experienced in his/her life. When readers read narratives, they should feel like they are experiencing the event(s) about which the author is writing. To accomplish this vicarious experience, authors include concrete details that make readers see, hear, taste, touch, and/or smell.
For this paper, recreate an event you experienced firsthand. Include concrete details that make people see, hear, taste, touch, and/or smell aspects of the event about which you are writing. Include as many of the communication concepts below as possible:
- Descriptions of nonverbal behavior
- Examples of self-talk and how it influenced people’s behavior
- Direct quotes from those involved
- People’s emotions
- People’s reactivity
- Descriptions of how you experienced emotions in your body
- “Noise”: any stimulus that interfered with exchanging messages: visual, internal thoughts, external sounds, etc.
- Context: physical, psychological, social, etc.
In its final form, your paper should evoke strong emotions in readers and be built around the following:
- A central conflict
- A climactic moment
- A central purpose/thesis
Many English teachers encourage students to “show” readers what happened in those moments, rather than telling them about it.
