Imagine you’re attending a concert with someone you’re trying to impress, and your companion asks the following: “I see that we’re going to hear Mozart’s Piano Concerto in Bb Major, K. 450. What does the K number mean?” How would you answer? (see chapter reading). Be sure to include a reference to opus numbers in your answer.
- How would you describe the opening theme (00:01 then repeated and extended by orchestra at 00:10)?
- What is a cadenza? There are 2 extended solo sections for the pianist–please identify those by track time. How is the 2nd longer solo informed by the main theme?
- How does this piece successfully fulfill the function of the concerto? (Think of the dual aspects described above and in the chapter reading.)
- And finally, where is your favorite moment? Mine is when it drifts into minor at 2:45, followed by the beautiful (and difficult) piano writing.
