NOTE: you will use the same general topic for the speeches in this class. Those speeches are:
- Speech 1 Social Justice Through Personal Narrative Presentation
- Speech 2 Social Justice Informative Presentation
- Speech 3 Social Justice Advocacy Presentation
Giving three speeches on roughly the same topic allows you to see how you can incorporate different elements and strategies, depending on the speech context. How would an informative speech on your topic differ from a persuasive one?
Before we necessarily focus on personal topics, let’s first focus on the broader topic of social justice. What is social justice? Wikipedia defines social justice as “a concept of fair and just relations between the individual and society. This is measured by the explicit and tacit terms for the distribution of wealth, opportunities for personal activity and social privileges” (“Social justice”).
Step 1: Brainstorm topics. Give yourself five minutes, write all your ideas down, and withhold judgment. Write down all the possible social justice topics and experiences you could talk about.
Step 2: Narrow your topics. Consider stories you’d like to share, issues you feel passionate about, and topics you would like to research. Remember, you’ll have this topic for three speeches. Once you have a list to work from, choose two or three of your top contenders. (If you already know what you’d like to do, you may focus on one topic.) In full sentences, answer the following three prompts:
- Briefly, what experience(s) would you share in your speech?
- Why is it important for your audience to know about and act on this issue?
- What concerns would you want to keep in mind when presenting on this topic?
Step 3: Let’s also look specifically at the Speech 1 assignment. You’ll need to share a story, or several stories, that stress the importance of your topic. What personal story(ies) would you be comfortable sharing in your speech? What outside examples (these can be in the news; things that happened to family, friends, or strangers, for examples) would you include in your speech?
MODE OF RESPONSE: Hit reply, and use text to share your Step 2 and Step 3 writing. For all Speech assignments, you will share information and receive feedback from the same group of classmates. (See: What are speech families?) You may use video, audio, or text to respond to the topic proposals of your family members.
