Building off a critical-cultural prefix “Post-” as in a construct that transcends a previously unique concept, specifically post hip hop is marked by a new sense of ownership over the artistic creations of a community. The role of the “post” generation artists is often to center the devalued, dehumanized voices of their community.

McFerguson and Durham articulate three ways that artist Nipsey Hussle used his art to inform the post hip hop generation to critical social justice possibilities: “(1) an explicit articulation of a Black gangsta and global or transnational identity (Richardson 13), (2) a claim to Black in- dependence as a contracted rapper within a white-owned commercial music industry, and (3) a direct investment in Black capital by building a brand, clothing store, and a coworking space for his Crenshaw community.” Think about ways that art and artists that you identify with inform your generation in critical ways.

The article also distinctly defines hip hop literacies as: “African-de-rived cultural practices developed by diasporic Black youth who manipulate, read, and produce language, gestures, and images to position and protect themselves in societies where they face public abandonment and precarious living conditions (Richardson and Pough 129; Richardson 2006, 43).” Think about the way art and artists that you identify with construct literacies for your survival, or perhaps why your survival doesn’t require a uniquely defined literacy.
