[SOLVED] Commercial enterprise
commercial enterprise Hist 1111 Final exam Spring 2022 Normandale Community College Frame
The material for this final exam can come from lectures, class and online discussions, the textbook, and our
readings (secondary and primary sources). Use all of them as necessary to write your final exam. Choose from
among the essay questions, below.
I do suggest, as you prepare for the exam, you make sure you know your main points/significant categories as
well as specifics: this combination of big and specific pictures allow you to include both the general key
outlines and the important specifics in which you ground your analysis. (This is, too, a suggestion about
organization – you likely see how it matches what we have done in other contexts [SSA summaries with main
point and examples] in our class.)
Make sure to answer all parts of a question, and explain how what you include helps answer what is asked.
(The most common weakness in an answer is not to answer some part of what is asked. When you have
finished, go back to the question, compare it to your answer, and make sure you have not made that mistake!)
Another frequent flaw to keep in mind: do not lose focus on what is necessary by writing on related-but-notrelevant things about that topic.
Keep in mind: these are large questions about complicated historical processes: they do not have short
answers.
Proofread your exam to correct errors; do NOT forget to include citations to show from where you get
any specific material you include (for all information you include; this is NOT limited to quotations).
The final exam is worth 100 points.
(Each question is worth 50 points. You choose two from among these three.)
1. The United States began as a commercial enterprise; commerce of all types remained a key
component as it developed. Reflect upon ways that commerce developed in the
independent United States and the ways that immigrants played an important part in the
expansion of the U.S. population, growth of cities and agriculture, and also in U.S. economic
development.
2. At the time that slavery was embedded in the Constitution (even though not explicitly
acknowledged), the Constitution’s writers and others could legitimately believe that over
time slavery might taper off and end of its own accord. By the end of the 1830s, to believe
that was no longer possible. Explain the process – with its “many parts” – that leads to the
new reality of a reinvigorated slavery. (Explain beliefs about why it might “die out” and
what led people to think/hope that, and what changes made that hope unrealistic.)
3. The Early Republic (post-Constitution to the Civil War) period was fraught with economic
and cultural changes and uncertainties. Discuss the aspects of those years (not only slavery)
that help you understand what led the United States to a civil war in 1861 and that help you
understand the length and eventual conclusion of the Civil War. Be sure to provide specific
examples and, where necessary, tell where the examples can be found (citations).
Please start each answer on a new page; include at the top of the page a brief reference so I know your
question/topic. (commercial enterprise or tensions over slavery or early republic, for example.)
Please double space your answers.
Because of the short time between the exam due date and the date I must submit grades, on a practical level
no extension is possible with this last assignment, just so you are aware! I will also not be able to provide
written feedback – sorry about that.
You must submit your exam to the final exam assignment folder before ; this is the date we were scheduled to have our in-class exam. (This 11 p.m. deadline matches
other deadlines, on purpose, to make it easier to remember.)
GOOD LUCK!! I wish you a refreshing and satisfying summer.
