In Part V 2 (pp. 139-49) Socrates claims that a mind has three parts (or aspects), like the Republic (city/state). Over the course of that section, a number of arguments are given for that analogy between a mind and the city/state. He explicitly or implicitly associates each three parts of the mind with one of the Republic’s three classes (Rulers, Auxiliaries and Workers).

 

In your own words, answer the following:

 

1)      What is one of Socrates’ arguments for his view that the mind has three parts?

 

Then, for each aspect of the mind (you might also draw upon what he says in the first two sections of Part V):

 

2)      Say what that part/aspect is.

3)      Say which social class it is associated with.

4)      Explain the basis of that association.
